Gene has been the owner of Ballert since 1986. He graduated with a BS degree in Pharmacy from the University of Illinois in 1962. During his long career as a pharmacist, Gene was owner of several independent pharmacies in Chicago and suburbs, and it is as a pharmacist that he became interested in orthotics.

Gene completed the orthotics program at Northwestern University’s Prosthetic and Orthotic Program (NUPOC) in 1989 and was certified by the American Board for Certification shortly thereafter. In 2002 Illinois deamed it necessary to regulate the evaluation, fitting and adjustment of orthotic devices to be controlled in order to protect the public. Gene was included in the initial group of orthotist's to become licensed by the State of Illinois. As the owner and President of Ballert Orthopedic, Gene is responsible for the emergence of Ballert as one of the premier O&P companies in Northern Illinois.

In addition to his responsibilities as president of Ballert, he attends all muscular dystrophy clinics in the city. Gene also lectures on cranial molding helmets and the orthotic treatment of neuromuscular disease at Northwestern University’s Orthotics and Prosthetics Certification Program, and regularly provides educational in-services to Chicago-area physical therapists, nurses and physicians.

As a practitioner John specializes in spinal and lower-limb orthotics, and also pediatrics orthoses. John actively participates in educational in-services for physical therapists, nursing staffs, and physicians.

Mark is an American Board Certified Orthotist and an Illinois Licensed Orthotist with over 26 years of experience in the field.  Mark mainly sees patients at our Downtown, Northwestern Memorial Hospital location.

Prior to joining Ballert, Mark served as a staff Orthotist and the Director of Business Development for the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Prosthetics and Orthotics Clinical Center, staff Orthotist and the Orthotics Operations Manager at Children’s Memorial Medical Center, assistant Director of Orthotics education at Northwestern University Prosthetics-Orthotics Center and began his career as an Orthotic Specialist, United States Air Force.

Stephen is American Board Certified. He came to Ballert in 2010 as an orthotic resident and completed his orthotic licensure December of 2011.

Stephen has been actively involved bringing the latest in clinical technology to Ballert.  He sees a variety of orthotic patients with an emphasis in pediatrics.

Stephen received his Masters from the University of Illinois Urbana and his prosthetic and orthotic education from Northwestern University’s Prosthetic and Orthotic Program (NUPOC).

Thomas is an American Board Certified Prosthetist and Orthotist and an Illinois Licensed Prosthetist and Orthotist with over 20 years of experience in the field. Thomas serves as a senior prosthetist/orthotist for Ballert, seeing patients in 3 of our 7 locations. Thomas is responsible for the development of Ballert’s custom Cervical Thoracic Orthosis (CTO) for stabilization of multiple cervical instabilities. Included in his expertise are cranial molding helmets, lower extremity and spinal orthoses.

Thomas is an active member of the American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists.

Thomas received a Bachelor of Science degree from Ithaca College and his prosthetic and orthotic education from Northwestern University’s Prosthetic and Orthotic Program (NUPOC).


 
Harry Newman

Harry is an American Board Certified Prosthetist, BOC Orthotist and Illinois Licensed Prosthetist and Orthotist. Harry has over 23 years experience with Ballert.

Harry began his career in orthotics and prosthetics as a prosthetics technician. The combination of technician and practitioner training gives Harry the ability to integrate the entire prosthetic process from casting, to fabrication, to patient fitting. Harry works closely with Ballert’s technical staff to solve complex prosthetic problems and to address the individual needs of each prosthetic patient.

In addition to his prosthetic certification, Harry has been certified in the following special systems: MAS AK Sockets, Endolite limbs, the Harmony Prosthetic System, Myoelectric Arms, 3S (Silicone Suction Socket), CAT-CAM Sockets, and Flex-Foot Systems.

Harry is an active member of the American Academy of Orthotists & Prosthetists.

Harry is a graduate of the orthotics/prosthetics program at White Bear Lake in Minnesota.

Prior to joining Ballert, Robert trained at Hines VA Hospital’s Orthotic and Prosthetic clinical and research services. Robert has received specialized training in Otto Bock’s C-Leg and vacuum assisted suction suspension Harmony System.

Robert represents Ballert Orthopedic at the University of Chicago Amputee Clinic. Robert sees patients at 3 of our 7 facilities.

Robert received a BA in Psychology from the University of Illinois and received his prosthetics training from Northwestern University’s Prosthetic and Orthotic Program (NUPOC).

After earning an MBA from the University of Chicago, Carl’s career focused on corporate finance in the healthcare industry. Prior to coming to Ballert in 1999, Carl was Director of Financial Planning and Reporting at The University of Chicago Hospitals.

After working at Ballert for many years, Carl retired to pursue his love of painting.  In 2009 Carl returned to Ballert on a part-time basis to assist in the oversight of financial and administrative duties.
